Peru’s Congress has ousted interim President José Jerí, deepening the country’s political churn just before the April election. On Tuesday, lawmakers vote to remove Jerí, Peru’s seventh president in under a decade. Congress plans to pick a replacement from its own ranks on Wednesday. Jerí took office after Congress removed then President Dina Boluarte in October. Prosecutors have opened a preliminary corruption and influence-peddling investigation tied to undisclosed meetings with two Chinese businessmen in December. Jerí denies wrongdoing. Peru’s constitution lets Congress remove leaders for “moral incapacity.” Observers say Congress also threatens judicial independence.
