Bulgarian president appoints caretaker government and sets snap election date for April 19
Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova has appointed a caretaker government ahead of snap parliamentary elections in April. The move is intended to stave off the country’s political instability and economic woes. Yotova says it's urgent to allay fears of rising inflation after Bulgaria adopted the single European currency in January. The interim Cabinet will be sworn in at a special ceremony. The outgoing coalition led by the center-right GERB party resigned after national protests at the end of 2025. These were sparked by public anger over corruption, injustice, and perceived oligarchic influence. This is the eighth Bulgarian election since 2021.
