Every fashionista knows that making a style statement is all about the tiny details. The way you wear your hair, the accessories you choose, and even your makeup can tell a story. The British royal family are experts at inserting their personality into their fashion, including 10-year-old Princess Charlotte. Kate Middleton and Prince William’s daughter seemingly broke royal tradition with one aspect of her outfit on July 13 — and it reveals her sassy side!
The princess attended day 14 of the Wimbledon Tennis Championships at the All England Tennis and Croquet Club in London on Sunday, alongside her parents and her older brother Prince George, 11. (Their younger brother Prince Louis, 7, was not in attendance.) At the event, Charlotte looked chic and all grown up in a white sundress with navy trim along a ruffled neckline, and a tiny navy bow around her waist. The sleeveless midi dress was paired with white ballet flats and accessorized with white bracelets. Her long brown hair was pulled back away from her face in a braided style with a blue bow that matched her mom’s royal blue gown.
Her outfit was sophisticated and cool — as fitting for the royals — but one detail stood out as entirely Princess Charlotte: her bright pink fingernails! The tween had her nails painted with a fun, bubblegum pink color, which is a marked change from her normally clean, unpolished nails. (We think it looks like the Essie Muchi, Muchi Nail Polish!)
Most of the time, royals like Middleton have worn subtle, nude, and very light pink nail colors. Queen Elizabeth II wore Essie’s Ballet Slippers Nail Polish in a light pink. “This always elegant lacquer was born in 1982 and received royal blessings from the Queen of England, just seven years after its birth,” the company shared with Today back in 2017. “Elizabeth II’s hairdresser sent (the brand’s founder) Essie Weingarten a letter requesting the shade to be directly delivered to Buckingham Palace in London!”
There have been a few notable exceptions to this rule, however, like when the Princess of Wales wore a bright red nail shade for Easter 2023.
“There’s no actual protocol about dark nail polish,” royal expert Omid Scobie previously told Harper’s Bazaar in December 2018. “It’s simply about being appropriate. We’d never see [a darker tone] at a royal engagement.”
For Princess Charlotte, her bright pink nails signify her young, fashion girlie personality. She has previously worn friendship bracelets as popularized by Taylor Swift (and made her dad one as well). On her Christmas Day walk last year, Princess Charlotte broke royal tradition again by posing for a selfie with a fan.
She is young, stylish, and undeniably herself, and we love Princess Charlotte all the more for it!
