Margaret Qualley's Matchmaking Mishap Reignites Mom Andie MacDowell's Old Hollywood Drama
Margaret Qualley wasn’t even born when Groundhog Day came out in 1993, so she wouldn’t know that trying to set up her mom, Andie MacDowell, with her former co-star was probably a bad idea.
The 30-year-old actress shared the story on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Aug. 14 with Bill Murray as one of the episode’s guests.
“Bill Murray, literally tonight, he pops into my backstage dressing room,” she said to Fallon. “He’s wearing a Piggly Wiggly shirt. And I grew up in North Carolina, and Piggly Wiggly’s a Southern thing. I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, Piggly Wiggly!’ Then, cut to, I found out he’s living in Charleston. My mom’s living in Charleston.” That’s when she got the brilliant idea to fix them up.
While a possible date between MacDowell and Murray sounds geographically desirable, the 74-year-old actor revealed to Qualley that he didn’t love working with her mother on Groundhog Day.
“I’m gonna give you the tea,” Qualley continued. “He was like, ‘You know, your mom and I — we didn’t get along so good while we were making that movie.'”
She wasn’t done with the gossip, though. She added, “He was like, ‘She took a lot of time to get her hair done, and she didn’t know her lines this one time.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, well, I heard a different story, sir.’”
Despite Qualley accidentally reviving their decades-long feud, The Substance star thinks their “kind of rage towards each other” might make for a beautiful relationship.
“And I’m like, ‘She’s single, he’s single. They’re both crazy. Let’s get it together,'” she laughed. ““I said to come circle back and get my number if he wants to connect with my mom. And, you know, if he’s got any sense at all, he’d be the luckiest guy in the world!”
MacDowell might not want to date her former co-star, but she was very classy in remembering their time together during a 2019 interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“I’ll tell you the funny thing about Bill, you don’t know what to expect with him. He is a unique person,” MacDowell said. “He is extremely creative. Fresh. Every time he does a scene, it’s fresh, it’s new, he’s adding nuances to it. Off camera, he’s just as weird, maybe weirder. Because he’s just being him.”
It doesn’t sound like this is a match made in heaven as much as Qualley wants to make it happen. But maybe a reboot could be in the works — MacDowell and Murray can revisit their on-screen magic.
