Selena Gomez Discreetly Gave an Update on Martin Short & Meryl Streep’s Relationship at the Emmys

If you want the tea at award shows, Selena Gomez is the celebrity to follow — and she certainly didn’t disappoint fans at the Emmys on Sept. 14.

The 33-year-old actress sat next to two of her Only Murders in the Building stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short, to her right. At one point during a commercial break, an attendee’s camera zoomed in on Gomez glancing over Martin’s shoulder to see what Short was up to — and that’s when fans got the best Meryl Streep update. Gomez turned to her fiancé, Benny Blanco, after noticing that Short was hovering over his phone while chatting with Martin. She told her soon-to-be husband, “He’s texting Meryl.” She sweetly pouted, proving how much she approves of her co-stars’ relationship. Streep did not attend the Sunday event, but she wasn’t far from Short’s mind that night.

Short and Streep have done their best to keep their romance off the media radar after looking rather cozy together at the January 2024 Golden Globe Awards. Despite every effort to claim to People they were “just very good friends, nothing more,” fans knew the dynamic duo was smitten with each other.

In fact, it was Gomez and Taylor Swift who were caught whispering by TV cameras at the Golden Globes, and fans thought it was a hot gossip session about Kylie Jenner refusing to let her boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, pose for a selfie with Gomez. Nope, that wasn’t even close to what they were talking about.

The former Disney star cleared up the confusion with a comment on an E! News Instagram post. “Noooooo I told Taylor about two of my friends who hooked up. Not that that’s anyone’s business,” Gomez wrote in January 2024. Once Short and Streep soft-launched their relationship at the Season 4 red-carpet premiere of Only Murders in the Building in August 2024, everything became crystal clear.

Gomez and Swift were discussing Streep and Short’s adorable romance — it had nothing to do with Chalamet and Jenner. A fan on X even commented eight months later, “The fact that that comment was, most likely, about them is everything ????.”

So, leave it to Gomez to give fans another update about Short’s love life again. Streep’s absence had nothing to do with a breakup, and he couldn’t stop thinking about her while he was at the show.

It’s a perfectly lovely Hollywood romance.
