Naomi Osaka’s Wild Australian Open Look Has the Sweetest Connection to Her Daughter
Noami Osaka brought the sea to life at the 2026 Australian Open. And inspiration for her bold and beautiful fashion came straight from her 2-year-old daughter Shai.
The tennis star looked ethereal in a Robert Wun-designed look with whimsical, sheer white fabric flowing all around her from a white hat. She wore this with a tie-dye turquoise and green zip-up jacket with organic tendrils hanging from the sleeves, which she took off to reveal a coordinating racerback tennis dress, designed by Nike. She also had a pleated miniskirt over white, wide-legged pants.
“When I look back at the players who came before me, I think about how those moments—those looks—have become memories that live forever,” Osaka told Vogue. “So much of the time, other people get to write our stories for us. This felt like a moment where I could write a little bit of my own.”
She explained that she first came up with the idea for her look when reading to her toddler. “There was an image of a jellyfish, and when I showed it to her she got so excited,” Osaka recalled. How adorable is that?!
The gorgeous final look, which included butterflies on Osaka’s hat and umbrella as an homage to the viral moment a butterfly landed on her face mid-match in 2021, was all about new beginnings. “The birth of something new,” Osaka said. “It felt symbolic of energy, transformation, and excitement.”
She looked gorgeous both with the fashion moment and afterward when she competed against Antonio Ruzic in the women’s singles match on Jan. 20 and won.
Osaka, who shares Shai with Cordae, told PEOPLE in 2025 that she originally believed she would stop playing her favorite sport after becoming a mom. “I was one of those people that thought when I had a kid I would stop playing tennis,” she said.
But life had other plans. “While I was pregnant, I was kind of very inspired,” she said. “I also wanted my daughter to be able to see me play tennis. It was such a big part of my life and I feel like she doesn’t know it, but she definitely inspired me to continue.”
The four-time Grand Slam winner added, “Just seeing her makes my day brighter. She’s just such a positive influence in my life.”
