Macaulay Culkin Breaks Hearts With Tribute To 'Home Alone' Mom Catherine O'Hara: 'I Thought We Had Time'
Macaulay Culkin brought tears to his followers’ eyes with a heartbreaking tribute to Catherine O’Hara after the news of her sudden death.
“Mama,” Culkin began in a January 30 Instagram post dedicated to the actress, who played his mom in Home Alone and Home Alone 2. “I thought we had time.
“I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later,” he wrote.
O’Hara, who passed away in her home at the age of 71, remained close with the 45-year-old actor into adulthood.
Culkin’s kind words were included alongside side-by-side photos of O’Hara sweetly embracing him as a child when they co-starred in the famous Christmas movie and a picture of the actress hugging him during his Hollywood Walk of Fame star ceremony in 2023.
At the ceremony, O’Hara gave a speech for her former co-star, saying, “Home Alone was, is and always will be a beloved global sensation … the reason families all over the world can’t let a year go by without watching and loving Home Alone together is because of Macaulay Culkin.”
O’Hara praised Culkin’s “sweet and twisted, yet totally relatable” sense of humor. “It’s a sign of intelligence in a child and a key to survival at any age,” she said.
“Thank you for including me, your fake mom who left you home alone not once, but twice, to share in this happy occasion. I’m so proud of you,” she added.
In a 2024 Q&A with The New York Times, Culkin said that he still called the actress “mom,” adding that whenever he sees the Schitt’s Creek star, “she opens up her arms — she goes, ‘Son.'”
O’Hara died in her Los Angeles home after a “brief illness,” according to her reps. Her cause of death has not been disclosed.
