I think it’s brilliant, and I think if I was a manager I would play a similar style. I’m surprised more managers don’t, for a few reasons.

Recruitment must be much easier. Lots of fantastic head it and kick it defenders, great shop stoppers or workhorse midfielders around that aren’t as in demand. They wouldn’t command much of a fee, not much competition and wages wouldn’t be crazy. In comparison every man and his dog wants a left footed ball playing centre half so they are like gold dust.

Whilst 95% of teams are trying to play a certain way, I’d want to be in that 5% and go against the grain.

If you sit there and think, what sort of teams do most hate to play against? That’s easy, in your face, physical, compact. Bingo, that’s how we’re going to play.
