I hope this doesn’t descend into a debate about Davies and who said what when on a bad run, football is an emotional sport. That said I was watching MNF where Carragher did a big piece on Spurs and their failings and covered it off highlighting the rotations that elite coaches are able to implement in their sides. It made me think about how CD is using Iwata at RB allowing us to get Doyle and Paik in tandem and create an overload in the middle. That was fresh in my mind going to Tuesdays game and the rotations we had throughout the side that night meant Millwall were running around like headless chickens never knowing who to mark or who would be where, it was fantastic, the 4th goal in particular Iwata starts his overlap from the centre of the pitch having been at the base of the midfield. I don’t think there’s another manager in the league that would be able to coach this to the level CD has. It’s made me realise that he is the real deal, not just at championship level, but beyond as well. There will be mistakes made, there will be days when it just doesn’t work and some teams might even exploit the space Iwata vacates at times but Chris Davies knows what he is doing. I have been massively frustrated at times this season and whilst I was never at the point where I thought he should be replaced and our away form needs big improvements, I don’t think we’d be lucky enough to get anyone else with his capabilities at this level. Let’s hope he stays for a very long time.
