Police: Carjacker shot by his victim, then hit by another car that kept going

KNBC in Los Angeles reported that the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the unusual incident that occurred around 8:40 p.m. last Sunday evening. The incident took place at the intersection of Compton Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s spokesperson, Deputy Trina Schrader, told KNBC:
“Investigators have learned that a male adult driver, the victim, was stopped at a red light in his vehicle.
The suspect walked up to the victim while he was seated in his vehicle and brandished a handgun. The victim was armed and shot the suspect.
The victim then drove a short distance away for safety, and awaited the arrival of sheriff’s deputies.”
Deputy Trina Schrader added:
“The suspect… was then struck by at least one vehicle traveling westbound through the intersection.
The colliding vehicle fled the scene. The victim… has been cooperating with detectives as the investigation continues.
He has been interviewed and is not in custody. When complete, this investigation will be delivered to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for review and filing consideration.”
She concluded:
“There were multiple cars on the road, along with pedestrians in the area, at the time of this incident. Investigators believe there were multiple witnesses to this shooting and subsequent traffic collision that have not come forward.”
In Central California on the same Sunday evening, four people have been suspected of car jacking a victim at gunpoint in a university-owned parking garage.
According to the UC Berkeley police, this past Sunday at approximately 9:30 p.m. someone (the victim) on level P1 of the Underhill parking structure was approached by four suspects. Two of the four suspects produced handguns.
The suspects took some of the victim’s personal property. The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s stolen 2018 gray Ford Fusion and in their own vehicle, an older white Honda sedan.
UC Berkeley police said the victim was not injured. UC Berkeley police have not said if the stolen car has been recovered or if any arrests have been made.
A little over a month ago on October 30th in Bakersfield (closer to Los Angeles) , a man was seriously injured after successfully attempting one carjacking but failed at the second attempt.
The suspect died a few days later from his injuries after the wild scene that had unfolded on a highway, an intersection, a traffic circle and a shopping center.
54-year-old Andrew Donley Apsit initially carjacked a BMW with a woman still inside and sped away from the scene. The woman was able to escape from the vehicle at a nearby shopping center (the Shops at River Walk).
Apsit was then involved in a major accident with the BMW rendering it undriveable, according to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. He had been driving the wrong way on the highway and collided head-on with a pickup truck.
California Highway Patrol (CHP) Buttonwillow Public Information Officer Adam Taylor said the BMW driver (suspect Apsit) then jumped onto the driver side door of another pickup truck and hung on for several hundred feet as the pickup driver sped away.
The driver of the pickup truck refused to surrender the vehicle to the suspect. Shortly after, the suspect fell off the side of the truck and landed onto the pavement in the eastbound lanes of Stockdale Highway.
Seriously injured, Andrew Apsit was transported to the Kern Medical Center and treated. He succumbed to his injuries and died four days later, on November 3rd.
