What makes this photo great?
It's a tender moment that shows the camaraderie between kids, who were figuratively and literally lifting each other up, during the event.
How did you get this photo?
Children of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated parents were welcomed by volunteers from Prison Fellowship Angel Tree sports camp, running around the court at the Hope Student Athletics Center in Garfield Park.
I spotted Jovia Miller, who had a wide grin on her face while playing with a basketball. I took a few photos and kept an eye on her, which is what I usually do when I see someone with a lot of energy. Often, expressive people at an event move on to do something even more interesting.
She moved to a group of football players and one of them, Joshua Larsen, lifted her up so she could dunk the ball. I took the photo, struck by the moment of connection between her and Larsen.
