Ex-Bears head coach Matt Eberflus: I haven't thought about what Soldier Field return will feel like
Former Bears coach Matt Eberflus said he hasn’t given much thought to returning to Soldier Field for the first time since he was fired in November.
Asked by Cowboys reporters what he thought Sunday would feel like, the defensive coordinator was blunt.
“I haven’t thought about it,” he said Thursday.
Later, he referred to Sunday as merely “an opportunity to execute.”
After giving up 37 points to Russell Wilson’s Giants on Sunday — the quarterback threw for a whopping 450 yards — Eberflus is probably right to be more concerned about his defense than his opponent. Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer, though, predicted Wednesday that he’d downplay his homecoming.
Eberflus brought half his defensive staff with him to Dallas, including defensive pass game coordinator Andre Curtis, linebackers coach Dave Borgonzi and cornerbacks coach David Overstreet.
“I think what Matt won’t do and what DO won’t do and Andre won’t do, and those guys is, those guys won’t make it about them … ” Schottenheimer said “Good, bad or indifferent, he’s going to be the same way every day.”
Bears tight end Cole Kmet said he’s looking forward to saying hello before the game.
“I know we didn’t win enough and all that, but I’ve got fond memories of Flus and I have a lot of respect for him as a man, as a coach,” he said. “I think he instilled a really hard work ethic here, a lot of things I’ve taken forward and will take forward in my career and my life.”
