What makes this photo great?
What I like about this photo is that it places you right in the middle of the chaos. It is as if you are standing with the people on the edges of the frame, watching the situation unfold at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement processing center in Broadview.
How did you get the shot?
The gate to the ICE facility parking lot opened, and I knew the situation was about to escalate. Last week, Broadview police had acted as a buffer between protesters and ICE. Now, they were stationed at the end of the street. I had no protective gear, so I positioned myself with my back to the only exit and tried to steady my hands.
Protesters immediately blocked the exiting ICE vehicle, and a clash broke out between them and the special response team. From the roof of the facility, ICE agents began shooting nonlethal rounds and at least one canister of chemical irritant.
During the chaos, I had to force myself to slow down and focus on my job. With people screaming and running in every direction, I had to be still and see. That was when I spotted the man in the photo being arrested. I got into position and waited for a clear shot.
