[Volleyball] Talladega Volleyball Earns Road Sweep at Brewton-Parker
MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Talladega College volleyball was able to secure a straight set sweep victory at Brewton-Parker on Friday night. The Tornadoes pulled big margin wins in the first two sets and were able to rally back in the third set to win by four points and polish their third Southern States Athletic Conference win and second over the Lady Barons.
The win improved the Tornadoes to 10-11 overall and 3-8 in conference, while Brewton-Parker dropped to 1-17 overall and 1-10.
Talladega posted 44 kills led by Zyaire-Prettie Garrit and Tianah Sanders with 11 and 10, respectively. Garrit was accurate making no errors and taking a team-high 25 total attacks for a .440 hitting percentage. Josephine Gates also hit above .400 (.429) and contributed eight kills.
The defense was led by the libero Kenya Glenn with 12 digs. Raven Clater and Maloree Calzadillas shared the setter duties and combined for 33 assists with 17 and 16. Garri and Glenn combined for all five service aces, and Gates and Mia Sterling were part of seven of the team's eight block assists.
Naomi Taake led Parker-Brewton with six kills. Katy Mathis had 12 assists and an ace. Eight different players had multiple digs and contributed to the team's 43.
In the first set, Garrit jumped on serve and led a 5-0 run to push the Tornadoes in front 8-4 after trailing by no more than one in the first seven serves. After trading points, another outburst of six points created the first double-digit margin of the game, 16-6. Several Brewton-Parker errors helped push the lead, but consecutive kills from the games leading scorer Garrit capped the largest lead of the set at 12 (21-9).
The second set was a familiar story, with the visitors rattling off an early run to pull ahead and eventually reaching a double-digit spread at 18-8. A 14-4 run highlighted the frame, which was finished by a streak of six to make it 19-8. Talladega concluded the frame with the last four points to have the greatest margin of the game with 14 points. Garrit ended things with an ace.
The final set saw Brewton-Parker tally 10 kills, which was a team-best. Talladega twice had 15 kills in the first and last set and 14 in between. The Lady Barons did roll to a 10-4 lead and appeared to be challenging at extending the game. Up six, Talladega's Glenn was on serve and the team scored four straight and sparked an 8-2 run to knot the score at 14. After falling behind again by as many as four (19-15), the Tornadoes swirled the momentum with 10 of the last 12 points.
Talladega wraps up a five-game road stretch across Georgia with a matchup at Middle Georgia State College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
