Over the weekend, something went horribly awry during one of Beyoncé’s Cowboy Cartershows in Houston. During “16 Carriages,” the singer usually flies above the crowd waving an American flag in a suspended red Cadillac, as one does. Toward the end of Saturday’s show, however, fans capturedfootage of the car tilting precariously to one side in an apparent technical malfunction. Beyoncé can be heard calmly saying “stop” repeatedly while fans yell for security to get her down. The show paused briefly while the car was lowered into the audience. After Beyoncé safely exited the vehicle, she told the crowd, “If ever I fall, I know y’all will catch me,” before resuming the song and finishing the show.

“Tonight in Houston, at NRG Stadium, a technical mishap caused the flying car, a prop Beyoncé uses to circle the stadium, and see her fans up close, to tilt,” Beyoncé’s production company, Parkwood Entertainment, said in a statement posted to its Instagram Stories. “She was quickly lowered and no one was injured. The show continued without incident.” Parkwood did not explain the malfunction, and according to USA Today, the stunt and the song were cut from Sunday night’s performance — the final show of her Houston stop.
The singer did, however, address the mishap in her own coy way. Early Monday morning, she posted a video montage of photos and clips from the show (including the dramatic tilt moment) with the caption “Sittin’ Sidewayz.” The audio featured the 2005 song of the same name by Big Pokey and Paul Wall. Clearly, Beyoncé has a great sense of humor. Had I suffered a near-death experience in the presence of thousands of fans, I would simply never return to the stage. I guess that’s why she’s a 35-time Grammy winner and I’m not.
