We Snacked on David Beckham’s Beekeeping Gummies
David Beckham may be best known as a soccer star and Posh Spice’s husband, but apparently he’s got other interests too. Namely, bees. Beckham recently launched BEEUP, a line of honey-based fruit snacks. They’re inspired by what a press release described as his “well-documented love for beekeeping.” Who knew?! The gummies, according to the release, “harness honey’s superfood power” in three flavors — Very Berry, Tropical Mix, and Sour Watermelon. It’s admittedly hard to envision gummies as a healthy choice for families on “busy mornings,” as the product claims, but hey, I’m no pro athlete, and Beckham certainly knows more about bees than I do. It’s well documented!
Having not seen all that documentation, the Cut staff (including a few Welch’s fans) gave the gummies a spin. Here’s what we thought.
“So yummy, but first ingredient is sugar, second is honey, so like … is it dessert?” —Brooke LaMantia, editorial assistant
“These have the flavor of sour watermelon … just without any actual sourness. I guess whatever tongue-eroding sugar they use for Sour Patch Kids isn’t natural enough for these gummies.” —Lucia Tonelli, head of social
“They remind me vaguely of drinking Kool-Aid at the community pool in the ’90s, which is an altogether happy memory, so thank you for that, David. The gelatin is pretty sticky, but again, prying fruit-snack sludge off your back molars is a quintessential summertime activity. Would eat more, begrudgingly.” —Emily Leibert, writer
“The Tropical Mix flavor tastes like a piña colada that someone would serve you at a mid all-inclusive in the U.S. Virgin Islands, which is very much intended as a compliment.” —EJ Dickson, senior writer
“If these weren’t marketed as sour, I’d have no idea they’re supposed to be.” —Julia Reinstein, morning blogger
“Definitely not as good as Sour Patch Watermelon, but I still found these pretty fun to snack on. The texture is weirdly satisfying.” —Erica Schwiegershausen, senior writer
“I like the flavor, but dentists would hate these. Would eat these if I was desperate for a sugar fix at 2 p.m. on a Wednesday. Which is me right now.” —Carol Lee, beauty writer
“There is a diva bee in Oakleys on the box. This is so sweet that it’s making me feel high, and I’m talking loudly and too much among my colleagues pre-meeting. Love this.” —Amy Rose Spiegel, features editor
