Kamala Harris Says She Wants to ‘Travel the Country’
Kamala Harris has plans for her future. She says they don’t involve running for president — instead, she just wants to do what people always do before they run, but just for fun this time.
Harris got into all of it on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Thursday, the same day she announced her book about the election, 107 Days. Earlier in the week, Harris shared in a statement that she would not be running in the 2026 California governor’s race, and Colbert asked if she was “saving [herself] for another office.” The former vice-president was quick to shut that down.
“No, no, no,” she told Colbert, before launching into her reason for taking a step back.
“I am a devout public servant. I have spent my entire career in service of the people, and I thought a lot about running for governor,” Harris said. “I love my state, I love California. I’ve served as elected district attorney, attorney general, and senator.”
“To be very candid with you, you know, when I was young in my career, I had to defend my division to become a prosecutor with my family,” Harris continued. “One of the points that I made is, ‘Why is it, then, when we think we want to improve a system or change it, that we’re always on the outside on bended knee or trying to break down the door? Shouldn’t we also be inside the system?’ And that has been my career. Recently, I made the decision that for now I don’t want to go back in the system. I think it’s broken.”
So what is she going to do instead? Like many unemployed people before her, Harris will take some time to travel while she figures out her next steps.
“I want to travel the country. I want to listen to people,” Harris said. “I want to talk with people. And I don’t want it to be transactional where I’m asking for their vote.”
Okay, so, for clarity’s sake, let’s see. What Harris wants us to believe her plans are here: She’ll go around the country and talk to regular Americans so that she can … not run for president again? She’s going to pull up to a swap meet in Iowa, hear what concerns people have, and then … What? Relay that information to the DNC? Sure.
Harris can say whatever she wants about her motivations to “listen,” but she’s certainly acting like someone who will be running for president in 2028. If she really wanted us to believe she was simply chilling, non-legislatively, from here on out, she’d say that she’s moving to Ojai with Doug to harvest their own honey. That would convince me.
