Outdoor Voices Is Pivoting to Horse Girls
Two months ago, Ty Haney made her big return to Outdoor Voices, the activewear brand she founded in 2013 and was seemingly ousted from in 2020. After closing its retail stores and getting acquired by the investment firm Consortium in 2024, the brand that pioneered the exercise dress is now trying to make its comeback — with Haney back at the helm. In July, Haney said the new iteration of OV will be more “fashion-forward and sexy.” Part of that rebrand, it seems, is a new line of equestrian gear.
The products, which launched Tuesday and range from $38 to $188, are a blend of the English and western cultures of riding, per OV’s Instagram, and were designed “for real horse girls Doing Things.” The pieces were inspired by Haney’s own “low-key” riding style, according to The Wall Street Journal, and include a striped rugby, a pair of riding pants, a terry-denim top and pants, and a T-shirt with a pink horse galloping over the OV logo. While the e-commerce is styled with riding helmets and saddles, it looks like OV isn’t selling any professional gear — at least not yet.
While OV’s Instagram comments appear positive, the horse girls in the r/Equestrian sub-Reddit have already pointed out the “saggy crotch and bunched knees” on the riding pants and said that the brand is trying to “co-opt our riding clothes.” “So I just got advertised the Outdoor Voices Equestrian Collection and it’s got some real bangers,” one redditor wrote, “like a couple of exercise dresses? And a bunch of baggy sweatsuits? And a pair of ‘cowgirl jeans’ you’d need to pay ME to sit on a horse in.” Harsh!
While this isn’t Haney’s first rodeo, it certainly does not appear to be her last. Maybe she can get certified horse girl Bella Hadid to model the next line?
