Grimes Has a Face Tat Now
For years, Grimes has been publicly lusting for a face tattoo: In 2022, she wrote on Instagram that “it feels like it’s time” to get “a white ink tattoo on my face.” Three years later, the time has apparently come for real. In an Instagram post Wednesday, Grimes shared a dead-eyed selfie showing off her new ink, which appeared to be a faint pink circle around her eye.
“Spent like ten years emotionally working up to a face tattoo but I guess I drew on my face too much and literally no one noticed, not even my parents, not even after the video lol,” she wrote. “That said I think @glyphomancer is onto something truly novel and innovative with her work esp on face tats- there’s a true beauty, delicacy, and innovation here imo.”
It looks like Grimes actually debuted the tattoo last Friday, when she dropped her “Artificial Angels” video, but buried under makeup and special effects, it’s hard to see anything. It does seem like the “delicacy” was deliberate, though: The tattoo artist she referenced, Glyphomancer, apparently practices something called “Cybersigilism,” a tattoo style that mixes ancient symbolism with futuristic elements. I don’t know what that means, but it does sound like something Grimes would be into. Rounding out the caption, she added: “Feel like tats are in a crazy renaissance period that’s sort of under appreciated atm.”
I don’t know about that, but I do know that reviews of the new ink were mixed. “I remember my first Ringworm …” one person commented, while another wondered, “Is the tattoo in the room with us?,” presumably referring to how difficult it is to see. Other commenters were more effusive (“Good morning princess” or “Adore you”). Might I suggest a cybersigil in black ink next time?
