Cristiano Ronaldo Brought His Fiancée to the White House
Cristiano Ronaldo and his fiancée, Georgina Rodriguez, brought their huge engagement ring to the White House for a black-tie dinner on Tuesday night to welcome the Saudi crown prince Mohammed bin Salman. Ronaldo — who plays in the Saudi League, an endeavor in which the country’s government has invested billions of dollars, per the New York Times — joined a handful of tech and business leaders at the dinner, including Elon Musk, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
Trump gave the soccer superstar a shout-out during his remarks, per The Athletic, saying his son Barron is a “big fan of Ronaldo.” “Barron got to meet him, and I think he respects his father a little bit more now, just the fact that I introduced you,” Trump reportedly said.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Ronaldo returned the favor, thanking Trump for the “warm welcome” under a carousel of photos showing Trump giving him and Rodriguez a tour of the White House (new décor and all). “Each of us has something meaningful to give, and I stand ready to do my part as we inspire new generations to build a future defined by courage, responsibility and lasting peace,” he captioned the photo of himself and Rodriguez posing with Trump in the Oval Office. It seems Rodriguez had a good time too — on Wednesday morning, she posted a handful of Instagram Stories of herself getting ready for the previous night’s festivities with makeup guru Patrick Ta.
Bin Salman’s White House visit marks his first time in the U.S. since the murder of Washington Post writer Jamal Khashoggi in 2017, which U.S. intelligence determined was carried out on bin Salman’s orders. When asked about Khashoggi’s death earlier on Tuesday, Trump contradicted the findings about the assassination, claiming bin Salman “knew nothing” and “a lot of people didn’t like” Khashoggi. Something tells me Ronaldo didn’t want to ask any follow-ups?
