The Queen of RichTok Says Her Husband Pays All Their Bills

Last we checked in with Becca Bloom, she was tying the knot in an ultraluxe Lake Como wedding that involved numerous designer-outfit changes and thousands of dollars in jewels. Now, the reigning queen of #RichTok — who amassed over 4 million followers in a year showing off her opulent lifestyle — is settling into married life, and it appears she has some updates on how she and her husband are splitting their finances. Long story short, they’re not. In a TikTok last week, Bloom revealed her husband, software engineer David Pownall, “pays all the bills,” which she called “the bare minimum” of what she expects in a relationship.

So why is Bloom (whose precise net worth is unknown but whose penchant for Van Cleef diamonds and breakfast caviar suggests it’s high) not contributing to the household expenses? The wage gap, of course. In her TikTok, Bloom explained that “equality” to her means she as a woman should not have to pick up the check. “Here’s what men don’t understand about equality,” she said. “You think equality means splitting the bill. Women live in a society where equality has never existed in the first place. Women still only make 80 percent of what a man makes for the same full-time job. So when you ask for a 50-50 date, know that her 50 percent costs more of her income than it does yours.” Bloom went on to say that women “pay more just to exist in the dating world,” including “about $400 a month just on grooming and beauty.” “And that’s not because they want to spend more, it’s because they’re held to the beauty standards that men built and judge them by,” she said.

Look, Bloom is sort of making some points, but, as many said in the comments, the calculus is not exactly the same for her, a woman who posts about her shopping sprees at Hermès and Chanel. (Bloom has never explicitly stated how much money she’s worth or where her wealth comes from, but her parents are tech entrepreneurs and real-estate investors whose company was valued at $98.2 million in 2010. Details on her husband’s finances are unclear.) A lot of people in the comments agreed with her but concluded that it was, as one follower put it, the “right message, wrong messenger.” A handful also pointed out that inequality is not just gender-based — “I will not be lectured on equality by this billionaire,” one wrote.

But Bloom is defending her right to wade into wage gap discourse. Replying to the commenter who claimed she’s a billionaire, Bloom wrote, “When someone can’t challenge the point, they challenge the existence of the person who made it.” Another commenter defended Bloom, writing, “So she can’t speak on gender equality because she’s a billionaire?” “Apparently not,” Bloom replied. “But that’s not gonna stop me.”
