Trump: 'Ridiculous' new NFL kickoff rule 'looks like hell'

0

President Trump resumed his push Monday against the NFL's "ridiculous" new kickoff rule that's aimed at reducing injuries while promoting more kick returns.

"It’s at least as dangerous as the 'normal' kickoff, and looks like hell," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post Monday morning after the season's second weekend. "'Sissy' football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL!"

"Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas?" he added.

The NFL didn't immediately respond to The Hill's request for comment.

The kickoff rule was overhauled at the start of the 2024 season, and Trump has voiced his displeasure with it repeatedly in the past. The league tweaked the rule this fall to further encourage returns and discourage touchbacks, but owners left the overall concept in place.

Under the current rules, the kicker's teammates remain in position on the field until the kicked ball lands or is touched by a member of the receiving team. According to The Associated Press, the rule change last year led to an increase in the rate of kickoff returns from a record-low 21.8 percent in 2023 to 32.8 percent last season.

Trump, an avid golfer, has been outspoken about his views on professional and college sports during his previous term and since his return to the White House earlier this year.

He compared the kickoff rule to efforts to change golf balls to slow the speed of play.

"It’s like wanting to 'roll back' the golf ball so it doesn’t go (nearly!) as far," he wrote Monday of the NFL's kickoff scheme. "Fortunately, college football will remain the same, hopefully forever!!"
