Live updates: Bowser testifies on DC crackdown as Trump’s UK visit wraps
President Trump wrapped up his state visit to the U.K. on Thursday, departing Chequers Court after hosting a joint presser with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The two leaders tangled over Israel and Gaza, and also discussed free speech, the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late night show.
Earlier Thursday, the duo signed off on a “Tech Prosperity Deal,” focusing on investments in artificial intelligence and other emerging tech industries.
Back in Washington, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee called District of Columbia officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, to testify at a hearing on oversight of the city. It comes just over a month after the Trump administration federalized police and deployed the National Guard to decrease city crime.
The House is also poised to vote on a bill that would avert a government shutdown on Oct. 1, possibly on Friday, after a procedural vote passed the House on party lines on Wednesday evening.
Democrats have vowed to vote it down, saying a shutdown would "send a message," because it doesn't address cuts to the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid. The bill on Wednesday night survived a procedural vote on party lines.
