Chris Christie: Trump 'wants to be prosecutor in every district where he has an enemy'

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) believes President Trump “wants to be a prosecutor in every district where he has an enemy.”

“Donald Trump's not content just being president,” Christie said on ABC’s "This Week." “He wants to be a prosecutor in every district where he has an enemy, so that he can make the decisions.”

On Saturday, Trump called on Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute former FBI Director James Comey, Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and New York Attorney General Letitia James (D).

Earlier in the day, Trump nominated White House aide Lindsey Halligan to serve as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Halligan replaces Erik Siebert, who resigned Friday after the administration pressured him to charge James with mortgage fraud despite not finding evidence of wrongdoing.

The Justice Department is also investigating Schiff and Federal Reserve board member Lisa Cook for possible mortgage fraud violations. Last month, Trump attempted to remove Cook from her post, with the Fed member suing the president in response.

Comey, along with former CIA Director John Brennan, is also under FBI inquiry for allegations he lied to Congress regarding the investigation into possible Russian interference in the 2016 election. The former FBI chief, appointed by former President Obama in 2013, was fired by Trump in May 2017 amid the Robert Mueller-led investigation.

Christie specifically called Siebert’s departure “disconcerting” and said that Trump is undermining “the way our justice system has been set up since the beginning of this country.” The former head of Trump’s first transition team believes the president is allowing his own biases to take precedent over his legal authority.

“People believe those decisions are now being made for personal reasons, not legal ones,” Christie added. “And that creates a slippery slope in our justice system. Now, we will have a very difficult time coming back from.”
