Watch live: Jeffries gives remarks amid government shutdown
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will speak with reporters Thursday afternoon, as the government shutdown stretches into a second day amid a stalemate in the Senate.
Republicans and Democrats in the upper chamber of Congress have failed to agree on a stopgap proposal to reopen the government, with both sides casting blame on the other over the funding lapse.
President Trump and the GOP have pointed to Democrats' refusal to buck on health care concessions as the reason for the shutdown, citing Republicans' "clean" continuing resolution, which would extend the previous spending levels until Nov. 21.
Jeffries said earlier this week that Trump has not spoken with Democratic leaders since Monday's meeting at the White House. The administration has also threatened that more mass layoffs are on the horizon.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
