Trump reverses Homeland Security funding cuts targeting New York

0

President Trump said Friday he had reversed cuts his administration attempted to make to Homeland Security and counterterrorism funding for New York City and the state.

"I am pleased to advise that I reversed the cuts made to Homeland Security and Counterterrorism for New York City and State. It was my Honor to do so," Trump posted, providing no other details.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) welcomed the announcement, saying it would mean $187 million would be freed up for New York police and firefighters

"From the moment @Sec_Noem tried to defund our police and counterterrorism programs, we stood up and fought back," Hochul posted on social platform X. "I’m glad that @POTUS heard our call to reverse these cuts."

Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), who serves in a competitive House district, also expressed appreciation to Trump for reversing the cuts, which he said were "unacceptable and posed a direct threat to the safety of New Yorkers.

"New York remains the number one target for terrorism, and we cannot let politics put lives at risk," Lawler said in a statement. "This is a major win for our state and a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to push back on misguided decisions."

New York filed a lawsuit Tuesday over a nearly $34 million federal grant for transit security being cut off. The lawsuit alleges that the Trump administration froze the funding because the state would not devote its law enforcement resources to immigration enforcement.

A federal judge had ruled Wednesday to temporarily block the funding cuts.

Trump's reversal comes as his administration has otherwise targeted New York City and New York state by freezing funding for key projects.

The administration announced Wednesday it was freezing $18 billion in federal funding for infrastructure projects in New York City, citing concerns about diversity, equity and inclusion policies.

New York was also one of more than a dozen states targeted when the administration said it was canceling nearly $8 billion in funding for green energy projects.
