House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) will speak with reporters Friday afternoon as Republicans seek to blame Democrats and their health care demands for the government shutdown, now in its third day.

Jeffries suggested Thursday that public pressure could force Republicans and President Trump back to the negotiating table, though Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) dismissed the possibility.

Experts say the shutdown could begin to have a significant impact on the economy and put pressure on Trump to negotiate a deal with Democrats, who want to protect health care coverage for lower-income Americans.

The Democratic leader's press briefing comes as the Senate is set to vote on dueling stopgap funding bills that could reopen the government.
