Cheese recalled over E. coli contamination linked to reported outbreak
(NewsNation) — Various cheese products have been recalled over potential E. coli contamination linked to an outbreak, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Twin Sisters Creamery and Peterson Company, a food distributor, both announced recalls after cheese products made by Twin Sisters tested positive for pathogenic strains of E. Coli.
The recalled cheeses were made with raw and unpasteurized milk and sold from July 27 through October 24, 2025, in Colorado, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. They were sold in 2.5-pound cheese wheels by Twin Sisters and re-packaged into 5 and 6-ounce half-moon-shaped pieces by the Peterson company.
"E. coli Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems,” the Peterson company warned in its recall announcement.
What are the recalled products?
The recalled Twin Sisters Creamery cheeses include:
- Whatcom Blue with batch codes: 250527B, 250610B, 250618B, and 250624B
- Farmhouse with batch codes: 250603F, 250616B
- Peppercorn with batch code: 250603P
- Mustard Seed with batch code: 250616M
Whatcom Blue and Farmhouse cheeses were also distributed by the Peterson Company, and have the following manufacturing codes:
- Whatcom Blue: 793511, 781511, 775511, 761511
- Farmhouse: 765511, 752511, 738511, 726511
Reported illnesses in connection to recall
So far, three cases of illness from Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli have been reported in Oregon and Washington, resulting in one hospitalization.
According to the Washington State Department of Health, "The Oregon case reported consuming Twin Sisters Creamery Farmhouse cheese prior to onset of symptoms." Additionally, "molecular fingerprinting of the bacteria from the three cases is extremely similar, suggesting a common source is the cause of the infections."
The illnesses are not associated with cheeses re-packaged by the Peterson Company, according to the company's announcement.
Consumers in possession of the recalled cheeses are advised to dispose of them and sanitize any surfaces that the product may have come into contact with. Refunds will also be offered at the point of purchase.
