Clinton congratulates Spanberger on Democratic flip in Virginia
Former President Clinton congratulated Virginia Gov.-elect Abigail Spanberger on her win, flipping the state from red to blue.
“Congratulations to Abigail @SpanbergerForVA on your election as Governor of Virginia! Your victory is a testament to your long record of service and your relentless focus on the issues that matter most to Virginians,” the former president wrote in a statement on the social platform X.
“I look forward to following your success,” he added.
Throughout her time on the campaign trail, Spanberger also received support from former President Obama, who appeared in two ad spots to boost the Democratic nominee.
“We need leaders who will tell the truth and who will take responsibility and tackle hard problems and bring people together instead of tearing them apart. We need leaders who won’t serve bosses in Washington or big corporate donors, but instead will serve the people who put them there,” the former president told voters at a Saturday rally for Spanberger in Norfolk, Va.
“Virginia, we need leaders like Abigail Spanberger,” he added.
Spanberger led her Republican challenger, Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, by more than 8 percentage points with support from voters, according to Decision Desk HQ's polling average.
“Our founders understood this from the very beginning. They didn't choose to call Virginia a commonwealth by accident. They chose it to signify that our government would be based on the power of the people united for a common good, not for a political party, not for a president, not for a monarch, but for a common good together, and tonight, Virginia proved that that tradition is alive and well — we are still a commonwealth in every sense of the word,” Spanberger said during her Richmond watch party after learning of her gubernatorial win.
“We are built on the things we share, not the things that pull us apart. And I am proud that our campaign earned votes from Democrats, Republicans, independents and everyone in between.”
Spanberger continued, “That's the Virginia I know. That's the Virginia I love, and that's the Virginia I will have the honor of serving.”
