Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has described the Premier League opening day fixture against Tottenham Hotspur as ‘mouthwatering’.
The top flight fixtures were released yesterday morning and will see Villa travel to the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in a 5:30 pm kick-off on Saturday 10th August.
Smith has guided Villa back to the top flight after navigating their way through the playoffs and face a tough test against Spurs who will be looking to significantly improve upon last season’s fourth place finish.
A former Spurs transfer target, Jack Grealish could also be in action having skippered his boyhood club to success last season.
The Villa manager admits that he will go into the match with some fear at the prospect of facing such an established Premier League side but is also relishing the opportunity to see the side which he supported as a child return to the highest level of English football.
Smith told AFTV: “It’s mouthwatering, it’s excitement – but it’s also a little bit of trepidation as well, against Champions League finalists,” he told AFTV.
“It’s also to be expected. We’ve given ourselves the opportunity to play these games next season and to be as competitive as we can.
“The fixtures bring the imagination to reality. I’m looking forward to every game, none more so than a ground I and Aston Villa fans have never been to.
“You down the list, and it’s full of games that whet the appetite.
“There are some big clubs there, we know – Liverpool, Champions League winners, Manchester City the Premier League champions, Manchester United.
“I don’t think there are small clubs in the Premier League now. It’s a very competitive level of football and one we’re thoroughly looking forward to.”
