Former Leeds United striker Noel Whelan has criticised Jack Clarke for his performance in the Carabao Cup defeat to Stoke City.
Clarke returned to Leeds on a season long loan deal after completing his move to Tottenham Hotspur which was said to be in the region of £10million (BBC).
The 18-year-old is yet to feature for Marcelo Biesla’s side in each of their six Championship matches this season.
He was given a rare start during the cup clash at Elland Road in midweek with Whelan claiming that Clarke ignored the instructions from his manager.
The winger was brought off at half time by Bielsa and was once again left out of today’s defeat to Swansea City.
Whelan suggested that there appears to be something wrong with Clarke’s attitude at present and linked his display to that of an academy player who does not understand fully understand their role within the team.
He told Football Insider: “I don’t think it’s a talent thing, so it’s got to be a personal and mental thing. When you get opportunities you want to go out there and prove yourself and that was his opportunity.
“It wasn’t the Jack Clarke we expected, he didn’t really do anything on the left-hand side, gave the ball away cheaply. When the ball was on the other side, he was still out on the wing – you’re not affecting the game by doing that. He was being shouted at Bielsa to come infield when the ball’s on the right side.
“He was just standing there on the left wing – I’d expect that from players that don’t know their roles, I expect that from academy players. Whether he’s switched on completely, I’m not so sure. You’ve got to fight, show some spirit.”
