Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott has been suspended from playing in all domestic club football for a period of 14 days after admitting using derogatory language about Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane.
The player was banned following an investigation by the Football Association in which he appeared to perform an offensive impersonation of the England captain.
The clip, which Elliott had posted on Snapchat, shows him mocking Kane using derogatory language whilst watching the Champions League final and quickly caused a backlash after it spread online.
After the video came to light on social media, Elliott released a statement in which he claimed he was sorry for the incident (The Mirror).
“Language and/or behaviour in the video breached FA Rule E3(1), as it was abusive and/or insulting, and constituted an ‘Aggravated Breach’, which is defined in FA Rule E3(2), as it included reference to a disability,” an FA statement said (BBC).
Elliott has also been fined £350 and instructed to complete a face-to-face education course.
The 16-year-old joined Liverpool from relegated Fulham during the summer.
Opinion
Despite his young age, there is absolutely no excuse for this type of behaviour from any person in society.
A 14 day ban and a £350 fine is a disgrace from the FA, who should have used this opportunity to set a precedent that abuse should not be tolerated on social media.
