Tottenham were one of the clubs who were linked with a move for Dinamo Zagreb midfielder Dani Olmo during the summer transfer window (Sport).
The young Spaniard’s performances for the Croatian side had already been attracting interest but it was his displays in the Euro U-21 Championship this summer for Spain that really catapulted him to the limelight.
Olmo was in fantastic form throughout he tournament and was one of Spain’s best performers in their campaign which saw them crowned champions.
However, despite the speculation, the youngster ended up staying at Zagreb beyond the window and he has now opened up on his desire to leave the club in the summer.
Speaking to Marca, Olmo said, “In the end I was clear that I wanted to play in the Champions League and I thought, why not with Dinamo?’ I have a contract until 2021 and whenever I wear this shirt, I will give my all.
“Well, in the end I didn’t have to make any decisions because I stayed. They wanted me to help the team get the qualification for the Champions League and we got it.”
The 21-year-old midfielder insisted that despite his intention to leave, he was happy to stay at the club.
Olmo addeed, “There was no way out, but now it is past and I am happy to have stayed. I want to play in the Champions League, which is a competition I’ve always wanted to feature in. You get stronger out of everything [that has happened].”
Meanwhile, ESPN report that Barcelona are now favourites to land the young playmaker after Spurs and Atletico failed to push through a deal for him in the summer.

Olmo looks like he is destined for a bright future in the game and it is a shame that we didn’t get the deal done in the summer. However, If Christian Eriksen does end up leaving in January, Tottenham will need a much more experienced and high profile replacement than Olmo who can come in and start delivering immediately.
