Former Tottenham striker Darrent Bent has warned Spurs that they might come to regret their decision if they choose to sell Christian Eriksen to Manchester United in the January transfer window.
The Danish international’s contract with Spurs runs out at the end of the current campaign and recent reports in the British press suggest that he is no closer to signing an extension with the club (Evening Standard).
A report in The Mirror a few days ago claimed that Manchester United still haven’t given up hope of signing Eriksen despite the midfielder preferring a move to Spain.
Bent has warned Spurs that even though Eriksen is going through a bad spell of form right now, he is a player of real quality.
The former England striker claimed that the Lilywhites would be considerably strengthening a direct rival if they allowed the former Ajax man to join the Red Devils.
Speaking to Football Insider, Bent said, “Yeah, it’s difficult as he could go on a free so Spurs have their hands tied.
“He’s got great quality, yes people have questioned his attitude this season, and he hasn’t been able to put in the performances this season like we have seen him do before.
“But for me, he is still a top-quality player. But to let him walk to one of your rivals? Man United and Tottenham are rivals at this present time, yes size of club, Man United are far superior to Tottenham Hotspur.
“They’re very much on even territory, so to make the step across for Christian Eriksen to Man United, I personally wouldn’t like to see it and if I’m a Spurs fan or Spurs player for that matter I wouldn’t want to see one of the club’s best players going to a rival and making them stronger, which he would do.”

Bent is certainly spot-on in his assessment here. While I would be more than happy for the club to get rid of Eriksen in January if we can get some money for him, I would rather keep him until the summer and let him leave on a free than joining another Premier League club. I hope the 27-year-old gets the move to Real Madrid that he so dearly seems to crave.
