Tottenham Hotspur once again yesterday failed to beat a lower league side in domestic cup competition.
After being embarrassed in the Carabao Cup earlier in the season at the hands of Colchester United, Spurs were also unable to get the job done in the FA Cup against Middlesbrough.
Boro took the lead five minutes after half time through Ashley Fletcher and it took a Lucas Moura header twenty nine minutes from time to save Tottenham’s blushes.
Former Spurs midfielder Jamie O’Hara has urged Jose Mourinho to make changes to his defence.
After watching Tottenham being held to a 1-1 draw at the Riverside Stadium, O’Hara believes that it is time that two players are replaced.
O’Hara described right-back Serge Aurier as a defensive liability whilst also highlighting the uncertainty surrounding the future of Jan Vertonghen.
The Belgian is out of contract at the end of the season and has performed considerably below the standards expected of him in recent matches including Norwich, Southampton and Middlesbrough.
“The problem with Tottenham is that has worn off, the first instance of a new manager comes in and you give that extra 10%, that’s worn off now,” O’Hara told Sky Sports News (05/01/20 4:05 pm).
“He has to now start stamping his authority on the team and improve them defensively now. Yes, they have picked up results. And, yes, they have got points on the board. But he has to make some changes and get it right and get it right quick.
“Every Spurs fans know, they need to get a centre-half, they need a left-back and they need a right-back. Aurier is good, but defensively he lets you down. Vertonghen, no-one knows whether he staying or coming or going. If they can strengthen [at the back this month] get a couple of good players in, world-class players we are talking about, then we will see a better Spurs.”
