While Tottenham Hotspur fell to another draw in the Premier League today, there were players out there who did the Lilywhite shirt proud.
Spurs could only manage a 0-0 result against Watford away from home, continuing their winless run in the Premier League that dates back to Boxing Day.
Let’s take a look at five players who looked impressive against the Hornets:
Paulo Gazzaniga –
This man has done a great job since coming in for Hugo Lloris and has often been a safe pair of hands for the Lilywhites. Few Premier League back-up keepers would have had such success. While he may only have two clean sheets to his name, that has usually been more the defence’s fault than his own, and he certainly earned the shut-out today. Gazzaniga made some good stops throughout the match, before saving a Deeney penalty in the second half.
Toby Alderweireld –
Certainly the best of the central defenders today, as Tanganga and Vertonghen struggled on the left-hand side. While Jan allowed himself to get bullied by Troy Deeney, Alderweireld gave as good as he got and won the majority of the aerial duels against the Watford man. Not only this, but in the first half, Alderweireld was spraying passes better than most of the Spurs midfielders.
Serge Aurier –
While he is usually great going forward and suspect at the back, Aurier was superb defensively today. He was physical, fast, aggressive, and no-nonsense, winning the ball back time and time again. I think he looks better in a back three formation though, particularly when Tanganga was covering in behind.
Dele Alli –
He played a deeper role again today, which does frustrate me, but I thought he worked extremely hard. His touches and passes were off at times, but he created some of Tottenham’s best chances of the match. I just want to see that flare and creativity as a number 10 near the box, rather than in the middle of the pitch.
Giovani Lo Celso –
Really growing into the side now as he looks to be the one to replace Christian Eriksen when the Dane eventually leaves. We must remember that he played his first 90 minutes under Mourinho just days ago, yet still had bags of energy to work hard and spearhead a number of the Spurs attacks. Really excited about this man.
