Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has admitted that he was left extremely surprised by Tottenham’s decision to hold on to Troy Parrott rather than allowing him to leave on loan last month.
Parrott has not been handed any first-team opportunities at Spurs over recent weeks, despite being the only fit ‘out and out’ striker at the club with Harry Kane continuing to recover from his hamstring injury.
Despite not seeing too many opportunities come his way, the 18-year-old has committed his future to the club by signing a new deal last week that runs until 2023.
When asked if he was happy that Parrott had signed a new deal with Tottenham, Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy claimed it would have been more beneficial for the youngster’s development to have gone out on loan in January (Irish Times).
Phillips backed McCarthy’s assessment and insisted that the teenager needs to be playing games at his age.
Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips said: “I agree with Mick McCarthy with regards to the lad, Parrott, at Tottenham.
“He’s very disappointed that the kid never went out on loan, and I 100% agree with him.
“For the kid’s career and his progression – yeah, put him on a new deal, but then ship him out on loan for there back end of the season.
“Go and play football. You’re at an age now where you should be playing week in and week out, getting better, progressing. I was very surprised that one never happened.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Perhaps Spurs decided not to risk sending Parrott out on loan after realising they weren’t going to land another striker in January. The fact that the teenager has committed his future to the club indicates that he does see a pathway to the first team. I expect Parrott to be sent out on loan next season.
