England national team manager Gareth Southgate has claimed that Harry Kane’s battle to return to fitness is currently on schedule.
Spurs head coach Jose Mourinho revealed last week that the striker is currently ahead of schedule with his rehabilitation whilst insisting that he will not take risks with his fitness which somewhat conflicts with Southgate’s verdict (Guardian).
The 26-year-old is currently on the sidelines after injuring his hamstring during the 1-0 defeat at Southampton on New Year’s Day which saw him susquently requiring surgery to repair the damage.
Kane has scored 17 goals in 25 games for Spurs this season and his absence was only made worse when Heung-min Son suffered a fractured arm in the win against Aston Villa last month (transfermarkt).
Southgate is hopeful that Kane will return in time to lead England out at Euro 2020 with fellow striker Marcus Rashford also in a face to be fit after he aggravated a back injury whilst playing for Manchester United in January.
Southgate told Sky Sports: “As far as I am concerned he’s on schedule, with all the information that we’ve had we know that he is progressing well,”
“[I am] realistic, really. Harry and Marcus Rashford have both had serious injuries, they are both long-term injuries, but both of them will do everything within their powers to be fit and ready for us in the summer,” he added.
“I think that is difficult to say. The first priority for both of them is to get back playing for their clubs, they are players of Manchester United and Tottenham first and foremost. All being well they will be available for us in the summer.
“I know that both of them want to affect their club’s season and the end of this season.
