The Premier League clubs were given the go-ahead to begin contact training on Wednesday as they work towards a mid-June restart of top flight football.
Reports indicate that the league is set to begin on 19 June or 26 June with Tottenham’s game against Manchester United likely to be the first game to kick off following the coronavirus pandemic (ESPN).
The overwhelming majority of footballers are said to be keen to get back on the pitch, according to a survey by the PFA (Sky Sports).
However, some have still opted out of returning due to personal reasons including Watford captain Troy Deeney who has made it clear that he will not be returning to training.
Former Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes believes that it is unfair for the Premier League to restart under the current circumstances given that all players are not yet comfortable with a return to action.
He insisted that those with bigger squads will have an advantage over the smaller teams who are heavily reliant on a nucleus of players
Speaking to Sky Sports, the former Tottenham number one said: “I’m not in favour of the Premier League returning, in a sense that not everyone is comfortable with it,”
“I believe the virus isn’t going away from one day to another. We obviously hope it does, but the problem will remain until a vaccine is developed. So I’m not in favour because not every player is comfortable with returning now.
“Some players need more time, and that can be a disadvantage to some smaller clubs as they don’t have too many replacements.
“They don’t have a powerful squad like Manchester United, Tottenham, City or Liverpool do. Not everyone can afford to miss a player because he fears the virus.
“For me, we should only return when everyone is cool about it and we have more time for training and adapting. It would be good to realise that we are safe in this new normal.”

While I can see where Gomes is coming from, the reality is that all clubs are just as desperate for the season to resume because of the financial hit they have taken due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Besides, barring a handful of players, it looks like most of them are ready for the season to resume.
