Manchester United midfielder, Bruno Fernandes, has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur were close to signing him Sporting Lisbon last summer but the two clubs ultimately failed to agree on a transfer fee.
Fernandes was heavily linked with a move to Spurs last year (Standard), with the Portugal international even revealing his disappointment at the transfer falling through (Record).
United swooped for the 25-year-old in the January transfer window with Ole Gunnar Solsjaer’s side paying a reported £67.6 million to bring him to Old Trafford (BBC Sport).
The midfielder has certainly hit the ground running in the Premier League and was one of United’s best players until the competition was suspended in March.
Fernandes has now admitted that Spurs came close to signing him last summer and that the Lilywhites may have once again expressed interest in January.
However, he insisted that the Red Devils were his preferred destination.
The midfielder said in an interview on Instagram Live (as relayed by The Mirror): “The first club that was close to signing me was Tottenham.
“With Pochettino…But I don’t know maybe they thought the amount Sporting wanted was too much so in that moment Sporting decide they don’t want to sell.
“Tottenham came in the summer but Manchester [United] was in January. Maybe Tottenham came again in January but when I knew Manchester was interested I just wanted to talk to Manchester.
“Manchester was my dream team in England so I am happy because I have the chance to go to a team that I always [dreamed about] you know. ‘At that time [last summer] it was Tottenham that was closer to me.
“There was other teams from France, one team from the Spanish league but for me when I talked the first team was Manchester.”

Some Spurs fans will be unhappy that the club failed to pay what Sporting were demanding for Fernandes. However, it was clear at the time that we were going to sign only one of either Fernandes or Giovani Lo Celso and the Argentine seemed to be Pochettino’s preferred choice.
