Tottenham legend Jermain Defoe has admitted to Sky Sports that he has questioned a potential future in coaching due to the recent events surrounding George Floyd’s death.
Defoe said he has considered undertaking his coaching badges to try and start a life after playing football, however, has questioned whether it is worth doing or not.
The former Spurs striker admitted he is not sure whether he will be given the opportunity of a place in coaching due to the colour of his skin.
“But on the other hand, it’s made me question my life after football. Is it worth me doing my coaching badges? I love football and I’d love to give something back but I question that because all of the players I looked up to as a kid, the black players, they’re not managers and coaches. They’re Premier League legends and they’re not in the game,” Defoe told Sky Sports.
“I’d like to think at some point I’d get an opportunity.”
Defoe played the majority of his career in the Premier League and has earned himself the reputation as one of the best strikers the league has ever seen.
The 37-year-old netted 162 goals during his 496 games playing in the English top flight. (Transfermarkt).

Coming to the end of his playing career, Defoe has considered a future in coaching but has looked to the likes of Sol Campbell and John Barnes for advice.
“I’ve spoken to Sol Campbell a lot, someone who has played in six major tournaments for his country, and it’s good to see he’s getting a chance. So I’d like to think if an opportunity was available, then I’d be able to get it,” he added.
Spurs Web Opinion
It is a massive shame that BAME players/coaches have to consider their future in the role due to the colour of their skin. Fingers crossed that Defoe does decide to go ahead to earn his coaching badges and it would be great to see him back at Spurs in a striker coaching role.
