Romanian football journalist, Emanuel Rosu, has claimed that Jose Mourinho turned down an extremely lucrative offer to become the Chinese national team’s manager before joining Tottenham.
Mourinho arrived at Tottenham following a year’s break after he was sacked by Manchester United just a few months into the 2018-19 season.
This represented the longest break that the Portuguese coach has experienced from football over the last decade.
The ‘Special One’ admitted in an interview with Sky Sports last summer that he had turned down multiple offers as he was waiting for the right club.
He insisted that he was resisting the impulse to jump back into management until a club with the right kind of project came along.
It turns out that the Chinese national team job may have been one of the offers that the 57-year-old turned down.
Rosu claimed on Twitter that Mourinho was offered a contract by the Chinese Football Association in which he could have decided how much money he was making each season.
However, that was seemingly not enough to tempt the Spurs boss into taking the job.

Spurs Web Opinion
The one thing that has always been clear about Jose is the fact that the only thing that motivates him is achieving success at the highest level. I am not surprised that he turned down such a lucrative offer as I cannot imagine him working outside the top five leagues. I am convinced that he would have only taken the Spurs job if he believed that he can eventually guide the Lilywhites to a league title. Based on what we are hearing from some players so far, it looks as if he is already planning a title assault next season.
