Some Tottenham Hotspur fans on social media are rather receptive the idea that the North Londoners could look to sign a former loanee in the shape of Pau Lopez.
Lopez spent the 2016/17 on loan at Tottenham from Espanyol and served as the club’s third-choice goalkeeper during that campaign behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.
However, the 25-year-old did not manage to make a single first-team appearance during his time in North London.
Despite this, he has been in sensational form since returning to Spain as he quickly established himself as Espanyol’s number one before his performances for the Catalanioan side saw him earn a move to Real Betis in 2018.
The Spanish international was in fine form for Betis last season and was then snapped up by Roma for €23.5m (£21m) last summer.
Estadio Deportivo report that the Serie A champions are now willing to move the goalkeeper on after just one season at the Stadio Olimpico.
The Spaniard is rated at around €40m (£36m), with Spurs said to be interested in snapping him up, along with Chelsea and West Ham.
While some Spurs fans liked the idea, others questioned the wisdom behind passing up on the opportunity to land Lopez on the cheap three seasons ago.
Maybe not this season as we need 5 pr 6 postions more than a GK, but next season we should look into this

This is a good signing

Lopez has improved massively since he left us. First choice at Roma now so wont be cheap.

We need a decent back up for Hugo, Vorm is beyond useless and Gazza is OK but not PL level. A decent keeper makes sense

Couldn't we have got him for free or a reduced fee 2 years ago when we had him? Even if we had to loan him wasn't that the best option?

Better off with Butland from Stoke. Still only 27 & knows the league.

Why did we never give him a chance?

We get rid of young players so quickly and then when they come good, have to bring them back at a higher fee with egg on our faces. Bloody hell. ????

Of all the goalkeepers we supposedly want him.Oh my God????

Spurs Web Opinion
It does seem like we made a massive error in not taking the permanent option to sign Lopez at the end of his loan spell with us. Even if our coaching staff did not think he was good enough to be our future first-choice, they should have still seen his potential. If we had signed Lopez and loaned him out to a La Liga side, we could have sold him for a lot of money even if he failed to break into the Spurs side.
