Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, Michael Brown has admitted his delight at the Lilywhites’ rumoured capture of Matt Doherty and has insisted that the 28-year-old will be a big asset for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Reports now indicate that Spurs and Wolves have agreed on a transfer fee of around £15million for the Ireland international, while the player has also agreed on personal terms with the North Londoners (Fabrizio Romano).
Some Spurs fans have reacted very positively to reports of Doherty’s potential arrival, while some Wolves fans cannot believe the low transfer fee being reported for the experienced right-back.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Serge Aurier could be edging closer towards the exit door this summer.
Brown suggested that signing Doherty could be an indication that Jose Mourinho’s men could take more risks going forward next season, given the defender’s tendency to get into the box whenever he can.
Reacting to the reports of Spurs snapping up the Wolves star, Brown told Football Insider: “I think he’s established himself as a wonderful player with a lot of admirers.
“He makes his runs late on, getting onto the end of crosses and trying to be creative but actually Jose Mourinho doesn’t always have that full-back going all the way so are we going to see a different style to be the case.
“You’ve got to say it would be a huge move for him, another progression, if he can get that over the line. We look at Wolves, how do they play but where would he fit into Wolves if that’s to be the case.”

This really is a fantastic piece of business for the reported price. Out of all the right-backs in the Premier League, Doherty suits our system better than anyone else. That is not to say that he will not make mistakes or be exposed defensively on occasions but given the way we attack (with diagonals to the full-backs always on), I expect the 28-year-old to be one of our main attacking outlets next season.
