Some supporters have blasted new Tottenham Hotspur signing Matt Doherty for his lacklustre display as the Republic of Ireland fell to a 1-0 defeat to Finland on Monday.
Doherty’s capture was confirmed by Tottenham a little over a week ago, with the Lilywhites reportedly paying a reported £13.4 million fee to snap him up from Wolves.
Soon after signing for Jose Mourinho’s side, the 28-year-old had to report for international duty for Ireland’s Nation League clashes against Bulgaria and Finland, as he was called up to be a part of Stephen Kenny’s first squad since being appointed as manager.
Doherty started both games as a right-back in a flat back four, ahead of captain Seamus Coleman, but the new Spurs signing failed to cover himself in glory in either match.
After being held to a 1-1 draw in Sofia last Friday, Ireland fell to a 1-0 defeat to Finland on Monday.
Doherty received scathing criticism for his performance against Finland, with some Ireland supporters claiming that the new Spurs signing is not suited to playing as a full-back in a flat back four system.
Some insisted that he needs to be played as a marauding wing-back in order to get the best out of him.
Midfield in particular seemed on the weak side. I’d much prefer if he plays 3 at back with Stevens and Doherty as wing backs. There were a few positives but losing at home to Finland is a real poor result.

Idah probably done better myself. Not his fault though.
+ #Doherty is not a full back. He’s a strong bully dog of a old skool winger that can arrive late at the back post. He doesn’t do enough for me. Zero urgency. Coleman plays everytime for me if it’s 4 at the back. #IreFin

Doherty has been finlands best playmaker and connolly has been there best defender.

Doherty has been very poor today. unusual for him though #COYBIG #IRLFIN

Watching Ireland vs Finland.
Spurs really gonna struggle defensively with Matt Doherty as right back sha. He won't make costly errors with fouls but positional awareness and backward passing choice are quite bad.
Going forward though, he picks the right passes most times.

Doherty and Stevens poor in both games by their standards need to look at team selection vs Slovakia

Nobody can tell me we will miss doherty. Pathetic attempt at an offside trap and caught out against finland #wwfc #thfc #wolves #Tottenham https://t.co/5iSZsSQtgC

I don't think 4-3-3 suits the players Kenny has at the moment. Would like to see a back 3 with Coleman in there and Stevens and Doherty used as wing backs. Poor today but early days for Stephen Kenny. Patience will be required #COYBIG

Listen not just because I'm an EFC fan but Coleman has to come back into the team.Doherty was brilliant for Wolves last season but was poor in both Irelands games. The whole team has been lacking a lot but especially a leader on the pitch which Coleman definitely is.

Pretty disappointed with the performance of the experienced players. Arter redeemed with a better 2nd half, but Brady, Stevens, O’Dowda and Doherty all varying degrees of crap. Poor tempo and lacked fitness. Brady was terrible, just to emphasise. #IRLFIN

Matt Doherty is a Wing back not a Full back.. there is a difference. That being said I think this starting XI would be interesting vs Slovakia assuming Parrot is still injured and Obafemi is still with the U21's pic.twitter.com/3jfvUaO6ye

Spurs Web Opinion
Wolves fans have already pointed out that Doherty tends to get caught out of position as a defender and is not really reliable in a traditional back four. However, we do not play with a traditional back four as the right-back is essentially asked to play as a winger when we have possession of the ball. So, I do not think Doherty’s defensive frailties will be as big a problem for us as it is for Ireland.
