Heung-min Son has admitted that it was a ‘big honour’ for him to captain Tottenham Hotspur for the first time during last Sunday’s pre-season friendly against Watford.
With many of Tottenham’s first-team stars away on international duty and with others unavailable, Jose Mourinho named a relatively inexperienced team for Tottenham’s final pre-season game at Vicarage Road.
The Spurs head coach handed the South Korean the captain’s armband and although he got on the score sheet from the penalty spot after the interval, first-half goals from Domingos Quina and Andre Gray confined the Lilywhites to the first defeat of their pre-season campaign.
Son admitted that it was a pity that he could not share the special moment of leading the team out for the first time with the fans.
He told the club’s official website: “It’s a big honour to wear the captain’s armband for this club, such a huge club.
“Sadly, there were no fans here and it wasn’t on TV, but still I’m proud and I’m looking forward to doing it again one day.”
Mourinho focused on the positives on the back of the defeat and insisted that he was pleased with his players’ attitude.
Reacting to the Spurs head coach’s assessment, Son said: “Yes, and we fought until the end. We all wanted a positive result before the start of the season next weekend and we tried to come back and win the game.”
The 28-year-old was also made an important goal-line clearance in the final seconds of the game when he ran the length of the pitch to ensure Watford could not score their third of the game after Paulo Gazzaniga had made his way up the pitch to attempt to get on the end of a corner kick to level the scoreline.
Speaking about the clearance, the forward said: “I saw it was an empty goal and I was thinking to sprint back, and luckily, I got back in time.
“2-1 is better than 3-1 and you never know, maybe if we had another minute we could have come back from there, but it wasn’t to be. Now we need to rest and to be ready for next week.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Son has arguably looked the sharpest out of all our players in pre-season and we will likely be relying on him to provide us with the breakthroughs against Everton, given that Harry Kane has hardly had a pre-season and did not really look match fit against Iceland. If Kane and Son can both stay fit for the entire season, I back them to fire us into the top four, no matter who the likes of Manchester United or Chelsea sign this summer.
