Arsenal legend Arsene Wenger has insisted that he harbours no hostility towards Tottenham Hotspur.
Wenger was in charge at Tottenham’s fierce North London rivals for 22 years before he finally decided to step down in 2018.
The Frenchman, who now works with FIFA as their chief of global development, had some fierce clashes with Tottenham during his time at Arsenal.
The Gunners had the upper hand over their local rivals during the 70-year-old’s time at the club and also established themselves as one of the dominant forces in English football.
It was not until Wenger’s final two seasons at the Emirates that his Arsenal side finished below Tottenham in the league.
So, there has certainly been no love lost between Spurs fans and the former Arsenal boss over the years.
Wenger admitted that the games against Spurs always carried special meaning but insisted that it did not extend beyond a burning desire to beat them on the pitch.
When asked if he harbours a special grudge against the old enemy, he told The Guardian: “Hostility no, competition yes. It was vital [at Arsenal] that you beat Tottenham for the respect of the club.
“Competition is important, as long as it’s not crazy.
“When you [were due to] play Tottenham, at the start of the week everybody was a bit more nervous than usual.”

While Spurs fans gave Wenger plenty of grief over the years, it is fair to say that there has always been begrudging respect for the man. Now that he has left Arsenal, there are few people I enjoy listening to talk about football more than the Frenchman.
