Some England fans were left impressed with Harry Winks’ display in the heart of England’s midfield as the Three Lions brushed aside the Republic of Ireland 3-0 last night.
Just like in North London, Winks has also fallen down the pecking order for England, with Gareth Southgate seeming to prefer likes of Jordan Henderson, Declan Rice and Kevin Phillips over the Tottenham man.
The 24-year-old was handed a start against the Irish, in what was largely a second-string side named by Southgate.
The Spurs man was given the responsibility of mopping up in front of the back three as he played alongside Mason Mount in centre-midfield, behind a front three of Jack Grealish, Jadon Sancho and Dominic-Calvert Lewin.
The Tottenham midfielder got the assist for the first goal as his looping delivery into the box was met by a towering header by Harry Maguire.
He then played a key role in the second goal as he won the ball back and set the attack into motion that ended with Sancho curling home.
Winks also helped England control the possession and tempo expertly while putting out fires whenever Stephen Kenny’s side looked to spring a counter-attack.
On the back of his performance on Thursday, some England fans want to see the Spurs midfielder given more opportunities.
Harry Winks is a baller

Always liked Winks as the DM. Uncomplicated, neat. Prefer a better ball player in that position in a 4-3-3 than a defensive player like Rice or Dier #England

Winks over Rice all day long for me in the England starting 11.

See how much more forward thinking England are with Winks and Mount.
Rice and his static football aren't suited to games like this. #ENGIRL— Michael (@rooney03) November 12, 2020
Harry Winks is levels above Rice.

Without Henderson and Rice this @England team is so much better moving the ball around, only need Winks in there.#ENGIRL

Harry Winks way better than Declan Rice

Winks and mount is 10x better then Phillips and rice.

Winks needs to get the nod ahead of Rice for Sunday game against Belgium #England

Think Winks is a big improvement on Rice, as he plays the ball quickly and between the lines, Rice passes sideways and slows the game down. Mount can get forward and press more than Henderson now. 4-2-3-1 is solid and gives Grealish a free role.

When Grealish gets the ball in pocket 9 times out of 10 he is on the half turn & looking to drive forward instantly. Reminds me of Gazza so much. Has to start ahead of any other midfielder or wide forward.
*unpopular opinion* Winks is better than Rice ????

Spurs Web Opinion
There are not too many better than Winks at recycling possession and helping move the ball from the defence to the final third. However, the problem he has at Spurs is that Hojbjerg does the same job and is much better than him defensively. Winks and Hojbjerg seem to be too similar to play together while Sissoko’s attributes seem to complement the Dane’s.
