Tottenham Hotspur secured their spot at the top of Group J last night as they defeated Royal Antwerp 2-0 in the final Europa League group stage match.
Jose Mourinho certainly took the match seriously, bringing on the likes of Harry Kane, Heung-min Son, and Tanguy Ndombele even after the Lilywhites were already 1-0 up on the night.
Only a win would have been enough to take the North London side to the summit of the group, with Antwerp being two points ahead before kick-off.
However, Mourinho bringing on the big guns meant there was no place in the game for Dele Alli who remained an unused substitute on the bench.
Alli has endured a difficult few months in North London, with game time difficult to come by under Mourinho.
The English midfielder has played just twice in the Premier League this season and has been left out of the matchday squad entirely for nine of the last ten games (TransferMarkt).
One journalist asked Mourinho why Dele momentarily left the bench last night and why he was not involved in the post-match warm down.
Mourinho replied (Football London): “Let’s not run away from the reality. A player that is on the bench and then realises that he’s not one of the five players [coming on] of course is not a happy player and I wouldn’t expect him to be happy.
“But every player that is on the bench or every player that leaves the pitch in cold weather, with me, they can go to the dressing room and I even prefer if that happens.”
