Tanguy Ndombele has admitted that things got heated between him and Jose Mourinho last season when he was struggling to produce the goods on the pitch.
Ndombele had a difficult first campaign at Tottenham as the Frenchman picked up a few injuries and failed to show the quality that convinced the North London to part ways with a club-record transfer fee to sign him.
The midfielder was publicly criticised by Mourinho for his lack of work rate and found playing time hard to come by in the second half of the season.
Reports even indicated at the time that the Frenchman did not see eye-to-eye with the Tottenham boss and the former Lyon man was linked with a move away from the club in the summer.
Tottenham decided to hang on to Ndombele and their decision has certainly proven to be the right one as the midfielder has looked much more at home in English football this season.
However, he admitted that things did not look good at one point between him and the Spurs boss.
Ndombele said in an interview with Telefoot (as relayed by Football.London): “At the beginning it was going very well. After there were injuries, and we went to war.
“Well, not really war because he is the coach, I respect him. I have a strong character, and he may have a stronger one than me.”
The 24-year-old admitted that Mourinho has helped him adapt to the Premier League and has been an important part of his turnaround.
Ndombele added: “I think that Mourinho has shown that he can make me a top Premier League player.
“Between last year’s Tanguy and this year’s Tanguy I think there is a difference “

It does seem like Mourinho and Ndombele have found a way to work together despite not getting along. I still doubt if they like each other but it seems apparent now that they have earned each other’s respect.
Daniel Levy also deserves credit for persevering with the Frenchman instead of moving him on as I suspect that Mourinho might have wanted him gone in the summer.
